“Wait, wait, wait, you’re going to Beck’s house for breakfast? Like this morning?” Ria’s voice echoes through the kitchen, where all of the girls in the family are sitting around the island drinking coffee. Even Anna is here. I look over at her newly dyed blonde hair and dark eyes staring down at her phone. She has no interest in this conversation.

“Yeah... kind of.” I smile and then try to hide it by biting my lip. The squeal that leaves my mom and Ria’s mouths proves I did a bad job trying to. “It’s not a big deal, he just asked me last night and I said yes. It’s not really a date.”

“It totally is a date! You’re going out with Austin Becker! Don’t ever say this to Taylor,” Ria whispers even though Taylor isn’t here. “I am so jealous. Beck is freaking hot.”

“Actually, Ria, she’s going out with her boss. Which is entirely inappropriate.” Anna speaks up for the first time all morning, not taking her eyes off her phone screen. Her sharp nose is pointed in the air and her thick lips are pursed. She’s wearing a pair of leggings and an oversized sweater on her slim body.

“Anna, relax. Don’t be such a prude. It’s his restaurant. If he wants to boink his sous-chef, he can boink his sous-chef. I think Luc deserves a little action from a good guy.” I cringe at Ria’s words.

“God, don’t say the word boink you freak! And I’m not planning on getting any action from him, we are just having breakfast.”

“I have to say boink, Luc, there are innocent ears in the room.” I look down at Rider crawling around on the ground in his playpen and smile. His hair has grown even longer in the last month and the curls are too cute. His personality develops every day and he’s turning into such a little sweetheart.

“Oh, cut the shit, Ria. First off, Rider is nine months old, he can’t comprehend anything we say,” Anna looks up from her phone and gives me the side eye before turning to Ria. “And second off, Austin screwing one of his employees makes him a bad guy. It’s that simple.”

“Who pissed in your cheerios this morning?” Ria flips Anna off at the same time she spits out her tongue.

“I’d be a bit more concerned about your son seeing you do that than you saying the word fucking.” Anna rolls her eyes and Mom huffs.

“Girls, get along. It’s Thanksgiving. And the first Thanksgiving in a long time that the whole family is together for that matter.” Mom’s right, we should all be getting along. I’m about to agree with her, when Anna interrupts me.

“And who’s fault is that?” Her eyes glare into me and I sink into my seat. I’ve never been able to talk to Anna. I’ve never been able to stand up to her. I may be her older sister, but rather than looking up to me, she has always resented me. I just don’t know why.
